One Hundred Years 1700-99 of Ballinrobe History

The eighteenth century saw an explosion in print media and in the nature, variety and quality of content.

This was a major advancement on the previous pamphlet or poster-type of ‘journalism’ which saw varied publications printing propaganda and ad hoc society news.

Initially, these news reports were concerned with foreign wars and matters affecting the aristocracy, with local news items rarely featuring.

By the middle of the 18th century however newspapers had become an important part of life and leave an invaluable record of the period for Ballinrobe in County Mayo.

Steve Dolan has chosen one article from each year from 1700-1799 to represent the main stories. They also include adverts for land news on major life events and articles on politics, crime and more.

Come along to hear Steve’s very interesting lecture at 11.30 am at Ballinrobe Library on Saturday 17th August at 11.30 at the Library.
