An instrument of torture

By Averil Staunton

A very interesting article from the Ballinrobe Chronicle on the stocks that were located at the Courthouse in Ballinrobe c. 1896.
This instrument of torture was a public punishment and set up outside the Courthouse where offenders were "pilloried" from perhaps a few hours to a full day or so.
Rotten fruit, bad eggs, offal, fish or worse was often thrown at the prisoner who had no defence.

I seem to remember reading about these stocks being found at the rear of Wally Loughrey's premises on Main St, where his bakery once was...1960s or early 70s.

Reply: very interesting Bernard and we would welcome any further information you might have on the Courthouse and the adjoining sites like Wally's, which were probably originally part of the Courthouse and its holding cell site. Great to hear from you.
