Stocks from Ballinrobe Courthouse
An instrument of torture
By Averil Staunton
A very interesting article from the Ballinrobe Chronicle on the stocks that were located at the Courthouse in Ballinrobe c. 1896.
This instrument of torture was a public punishment and set up outside the Courthouse where offenders were "pilloried" from perhaps a few hours to a full day or so.
Rotten fruit, bad eggs, offal, fish or worse was often thrown at the prisoner who had no defence.
