Grandfather Leyden: Native of Ballinrobe

By Tracey Leyden

I am researching my family tree. My Grandfather, Thomas Bartholomew Leyden was a native of Ballinrobe. He resided at 47 Glebe Street, Ballinrobe, with his parents and siblings. His Father was also Thomas Leyden and Mother was Mary Ellen Leyden (nee McGowan, Currid). He graduated from St. Patrick's Training College Drumcondra, Dublin.  He was a Teacher at The Christian Brothers School in Ballinrobe in 1917 to 1919. He was an amateur actor with the school productions. His name appears in 'The Bridge' magazine published locally. He completed his qualifications to teach Irish in public schools in Northern Ireland 1923. He moved to Cookstown Co. Tyrone to take up a teaching post with the Public Elementary School, Loy Boys School Cookstown 1925. He stayed with the school until he had to retire early due to illness. He died 1940. He is buried in the family grave, Drummullan, Co. Tyrone Cemetery,
