By Averil Staunton

The idea for the Murphy Family story first came about in October 2008, at a party in Myles Estate, Kilmaine to celebrate Miko and Angela Murphy’s, (Ballinrobe) 39th wedding anniversary.

A comprehensive history has been written about the family by Ms. Mary Mortimer (nee Joyce) with research by Angela Murphy (nee O’Brien).   The book is dedicated to the Murphy’s and their descendants.   Mr. Martin and Ann Murphy, Newsagents, Main Street, Ballinrobe are also members of the family as are some of the Ryder Family and the McTigue Family.

Searching for Rose’s family

For the moment, family members of Rose, who was born in 1896, are being sought.    Rose immigrated to America on the13th April 1895 and travelled on the ship Britannica.   She had gone out to a Cissie Burke and in time met her future husband Austin Sammon from Ballinsdea, Westport.

Her Husband

Austin, one of nine children, was born in 1880 and arrived in America on 27th Sept 1905 and had travelled on the ship Caronia.

Marriage

They married on the 3rd August, 1910 and initially lived in New York.   They moved elsewhere in the States some years later.

Their children

They had four children: Peter who worked for Pan Am Airlines, Austin, Catherine (Kitty) and May.

If you know any of the decendants of the four children listed above, have contact numbers or e-mail addresses, or where they maybe located, please let us know.

We would love to hear from any of the family, and wish you all well wherever you are.

Hi, its a smaller world than I think I am a first cousin of Liz Mc caughey; my father was the youngest brother of her mother. His name was John T Murphy & I think that he was the last of her mothers family who died in 2006.

There is another first cousin Martin Joes son Liam still running the farm that our parents were born on.  In fact I think that Liam gave me a copy of that book a year or two ago , now I will have to go up in the loft and have a look for it. Perhaps you could send me Liz's email address or send mine to her.

Reply: Liz, will you forward your address please to ballinrobehistorysite@gmail.com

My mother was Eileen Murphy McCaughey, born in 1908 in Kilshanvy to Winifred Comber and Martin Murphy. She lived in Kilmaine after her parents died. She took nurse's training in England in the 20's and later joined her brothers and sister Rose in San Francisco. I would love to obtain a copy of this journal.

I have no idea whether there is any relation to the Austin Sammon named above, but the keyboardist for blues legend Buddy Guy is MARTY SAMMON.

His father was a Chicago Policeman, but that's all I know about the Sammon side of his family. Marty lives in the Chicago area and if you would like to contact him, let me know.

Reply: Thank you Shelia; what a coincidence! I put up an article yesterday about Martin Fahey of Roxboro/Chicago- see what's new page.
